What should you check first?
Start with the source, the data timestamp, the quote currency, and the period being measured. A seven-day change is not the same as a 24-hour change. The date a website was rebuilt does not tell you when its market figures were collected.
On Mempool Atlas, Data as of describes the underlying snapshot. A fallback label means that some or all figures come from previously stored data. Open the asset page for its individual timestamp when a board contains records of different ages.
What does market cap measure?
Market capitalization is commonly calculated as price multiplied by circulating supply. It describes the value implied by applying that price to that supply. It does not mean the same amount of cash entered the market or could be withdrawn from it. Supply estimates and definitions matter. CoinGecko methodology explains our provider's calculation.
For a hypothetical token with 10 million circulating units at $2 each, the implied market capitalization is $20 million. If you compare its price with another token, compare their supplies too. A lower unit price by itself does not establish a lower valuation.
Is high volume the same as liquidity?
No. Volume describes reported trading over a period; an order book or pool determines what can be traded at a particular moment. CoinGecko aggregates data from multiple markets, so its reference price and reported activity do not represent a single executable quote. Read the provider's aggregation methodology.
Before making an execution decision, check the exact venue, trading pair, spread, available depth, and the cost of entering and leaving the position. Our snapshot tables do not supply an order-book simulation.
A repeatable comparison checklist
- Confirm both assets use the same quote currency and comparable timestamps.
- Separate the 24-hour change from the seven-day change.
- Compare market capitalization alongside supply, rather than relying on unit price.
- Check whether reported volume comes from venues you can actually use.
- Read the asset's custody and transfer risks before drawing a conclusion from performance.
- Write down what evidence would change your interpretation.
Use the asset comparison library to organize figures, then verify material assumptions with current primary sources. A snapshot helps form a question; it does not resolve every risk.
